Worood Zuhair, a biologist trained in Karbala, Iraq, was brutalized by her brother into spinal paralysis and forced to flee Iraq after expressing doubts about Islam. In Germany, she was hounded with death threats for her secular blogging.
When Worood Zuhair left her house without permission from her father and expressed doubts about Islam, her father and brother responded with physical abuse.
“When your own father gives your soul to Azrael, the angel of death, that is enormously painful. He did it so often. I couldn't take it anymore.” - Worood Zuhair
Worood’s brother beat her until she was unconscious, causing an “incomplete spinal paralysis.” Her father attempted to emotionally abuse her into submission. Ultimately, the abuse she faced at home prompted her to flee Iraq, where she lived, to Germany as a refugee.
“We will come by in half an hour and kill you.” - phoned death threat to Worood
Today, Worood is a biologist and a blogger, regularly posting on social media in advocacy of secular causes. However, even in Germany, this is not done without risk. She has received large quantities of death threats, at least one of which seemed to come from Germany; so actionable were some of these threats that Worood was actually placed under police protection.
