Chekannur Moulavi was an Indian Islamic cleric who embraced Islamic modernism. In his home state of Kerala, he had a reputation for liberal and progressive views, as evidenced by his founding of the Qur’an Sunnath Society, a member of which, Jamitha Teacher, became India’s first female imam.

It was not until 25 years later that the only attempt at a modicum of justice in this case was botched.

In 1993, Chekannur mysteriously disappeared. He was never seen again and presumed murdered. It was not until 25 years later that the only attempt at a modicum of justice in this case was botched. Some evidence existed of a conspiracy to kidnap and murder Chekannur for what the would-be assailants viewed as his anti-Islam leanings.

However, in the absence of irrefutable evidence that such a plan was concocted and executed, suspects in the case were acquitted.
