Kishan Bolia, an Indian man, had been reported to police for a Facebook post allegedly insulting to Islam before suffering death at the hands of vigilantes.
In January 2022, Kishan Bolia was riding on his motorcycle when he was shot and killed by two "bike-borne" assailants in the Indian city of Dhandhuka. Reports conflict as to his age, but he was either 27 or 30.
Kishan had been recently accused of posting video content on Facebook blasphemous to Islam. According to reporting, "some members of the Muslim community" registered a complaint with police under India's general blasphemy law (which criminalizes "hurting religious sentiments"). Kishan, however, did not get the chance to have his day in court.
"The mob threw stones at the PCR van of Pradyumannagar police station and damaged it. They also vandalised three shops opposite Galaxy Cinema and one in Fulchhab Chowk." - Manoharsinh Jadeja, police deputy commissioner, describing a protest over the incident gone awry in the city of Rajkot
Several were charged in connection with the slaying, including two Muslim clerics. Mass demonstrations, some numbering in the thousands, organized by "right-wing groups" also occurred across India in the aftermath of the killing; some of these became unruly and violent.
