In March 2013, 28-year-old Saniur Rahman fell victim to an attack on his way home in Dhaka. At around 8:30pm, his unidentified assailants stabbed him “in the head and legs.” However, he was quickly taken to the hospital by the denizens of the neighborhood in which the incident occurred, and he survived.
"I got on a bus from Farmgate and got down in front of the Purabi Cinema Hall. As I was walking to my way, two bearded youths attacked me. They wore Punjabi." - Saniur Rahman
Saniur had maintained a heavy online presence, not being timid about his thoughts on social, political, and religious issues. He was also active in Bangladesh's 2013 protests against Islamist leaders. On his Facebook account, he had frequently spoken in criticism of Jamaat-e-Islami, an Islamist political party, as well as other religious political parties and movements.

Blasphemy law in Bangladesh allows the state to arrest, trial and imprison any person who has intention of hurting "religious sentiments." While the state does not have any law against apostasy, vigilantism or non-state groups prosecute apostates on their own. Vigilante violence has been an especially acute issue, most notably in the mid-2010s when a string of secularist and atheist bloggers suffered murder and attempted murder at the hands of Islamist extremists.
